Call for Papers 2014 : Current Trends in Translation Teaching and Learning

Current Trends in Translation Teaching and Learning is a double-blind refereed series that explores a variety of issues related to translation teaching and learning. Qualitative or quantitative research articles that are relevant to translation teaching and learning are sought. It is available free online via our website.

The length of papers should be from 2500 up to 6000 words.

Submission of articles:

The deadline for submission of articles is February 15, 2014

Reviews returned:

Le DAMT est un outil de référence pour la traduction ou les recherches ponctuelles dans les domaines de l’économie, de la mondialisation et des droits de l’homme. Sa structure de thésaurus permet l’exploitation des relations sémantiques. On peut obtenir ainsi les termes associés à tout autre terme (ex. : les termes reliés à Régulation sociale) ou la liste de toutes les relations pour l’ensemble du dictionnaire (ex. : toutes les relations gener-spec, part-tot, acteur-action).

Le DAMT peut être consulté en anglais, français ou espagnol, en choisissant la langue en haut à droite.

QUALETRA CfP: Conference on Legal Translation

The QUALETRA consortium invites everyone interested in legal translation to participate in the final QUALETRA conference – legal translators, researchers, trainers, legal practitioners, (including lawyers, judges, etc). We especially invite experts to describe the state of the art and demonstrate their cutting-edge results and regular legal translation users to share their experiences.

The final conference of the project will focus on training, assessment, certification and accreditation of legal translators in criminal procedures in the EU. The project aims at providing an EU-wide platform for the exchange of best practices and experiences in the following areas, related to the specific working conditions of legal translation in criminal proceedings:

Generic analysis of the essential document types as listed in Directive 2010/64/EU (Article 3) with a view to defining indicators, templates, and terminology to achieve quality in legal translation of these documents;
Generic analysis of the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) with a view to defining indicators and terminology to achieve quality in legal translation of these documents;
Development of curricula and training materials for legal translators;
Development of one or more core curricula for language training of legal practitioners;
Development of testing, evaluation and assessment procedures and materials for legal translators;
Development of EU-wide recommendations and best practices for testing, evaluation & assessment procedures and materials.

Therefore, we would like to receive abstracts for presentation at the conference. Accepted presenters will be eligible for funds allocated by the project as follows: the amount as is budgetted for travel within the EU will be allocated to both presenters from the EU and from beyond the EU. This entails that presenters from beyond the EU will have to sollicit funding for the difference between the EU amount and the overseas costs.

Important dates

Submission of abstract: 15 February 2014

Notification of acceptance: 15 March 2014. It will be specified whether the abstract will be accepted for presentation at the conference and/or for the publication in the journal.

Submission of the full paper: 31 August 2014.

Dear friends and colleagues,

I am writing to let you know that Ken and I have decided to accept an offer from Routledge to acquire St. Jerome Publishing.

As you all know, St Jerome has been publishing high quality journals and books in the field of translation studies since 1995. As a small, specialist press it enjoyed the dedication of its founders, their intimate knowledge of the field, and the support of an expanding community of young and established scholars across the world. Over the past 19 years it produced groundbreaking work that helped ensure greater visibility for the discipline and its scholars at a time when practically no publisher was engaging in a sustained way with translation and interpreting. With very limited human and other resources it managed to publish and disseminate over 64 monographs; 3 anthologies; 1 dictionary; 27 collected volumes; 3 book series (Translation Theories Explored, Translation Practices Explained, and Encounters, the latter now discontinued); the first abstracting service dedicated to research in translation and interpreting (TSA Online), and two highly successful periodicals: The Translator (1995 - ) and the Interpreter and Translator Trainer (2007 - ).

St. Jerome founders always envisaged the project as a temporary intervention designed to help establish translation studies as a discipline and encourage innovative and wide ranging research in the field. We believe it has now achieved its aims and we can afford to entrust it to a commercial publisher with the resources, expertise, and above all commitment to continue its mission and ensure its long term survival. We could not have chosen a better and more prestigious academic publisher than Routledge and are very pleased that Taylor and Francis are committing to taking on the St. Jerome list and expanding it in future. We are confident that this development will provide existing St. Jerome authors and editors with excellent levels of support and visibility and offer new authors a first class environment in which to develop and promote their work.

We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of St. Jerome over the past 19 years and hope that they will extend the same generous and professional levels of support to our colleagues at Routledge over the months and years to come.
