Call For Papers

The rise of English as an international world language has had a dramatic effect on the practice of translation in all domains. It is even stated that whenever English is involved in the process there can be no illusion of parity between source and target languages. As a consequence, translation into and from English cannot be approached in a neutral way, or as a purely technical matter; instead, it must necessarily be considered within a context of power relations, inextricably linked to questions of culture, history and ideology. This has naturally had repercussions on many aspects of Translation Studies, reigniting debates about (amongst other things) the translator’s ethical responsibility and capacity for intervention in situations of cultural inequality, not to mention the effect that constant calquing from English is having upon other languages.
There is, however, another school of thought which views International English as a de-cultured hybrid construction that has ceased to be the property of mother tongue speakers and is therefore no longer the covert vehicle of Anglo-Saxon values. This approach brings a whole new set of issues to the discussion: issues related to source-text hybridity and linguistic simplification; scale-shifting; translating in a cultural vacuum; implications for translation technologies and translator training; and the coexistence of global English with local varieties around the world.
We invite proposals for 20-minute papers offering case studies on various text types and translation directions as well as theoretical, methodological and terminological studies.
Suggested topics include but are not restricted to:

• The impact of the use of English as an international language on the translation of literary, audio-visual and scientific and technical texts
• The implications of International English for translator training
• The implications of International English for translator / translation technologies
• Subtitling and fansubbing
• International English as the intermediary in indirect translation
• The relative merits of the various models (English as an International Language; Global English; World Englishes; English as a Lingua Franca) in the translational context
• Profiling (inter)national literature (in periodicals, volumes, film, radio, TV)
• Presenting (inter)national literature (in prefaces, collections, anthologies, national historiography, literary / scientific historiography)
• Theoretical, methodological and terminological issues in researching the interplay of international English and translation

Abstracts (in English) should be no more than 500 words, and indicate title of paper, four key words, author’s name, institutional affiliation, email address, language of presentation (English or Portuguese), audiovisual requirements and a bio-note (max. 100 words, mentioning main research interests, projects and selected publications).

A unique meeting point for experts in language research and technology

Call for abstracts

First the Computer, then Internet and more recently the Cloud, are changing and modelling expectations and processes in the Language and Localization industry. These are accompanied by new requirements for Standards and Intercompatibility. The digital age is modifying the concept of text and quality. Content is a key item together with strings, chunks, segments and words.

- How does this affect demand and supply of language services?
- What are the tools available to meet the new demands?
- What are the resources and how can they be managed in this evolving context?
- How do these changes affect translators and other language professionals?
- What is the training necessary to deal with these new requirements?

The Translating and the Computer Conference seeks submissions including, but not limited to:
- Terminology
- Translation technology (on and off-line)
- Memories
- Corpora (use of, data collection and structuring)
- Workflow (preprocessing, postprocessing and feedback loops, progress tracking)
- Quality Assurance (revision aids, standards, processes and metrics)
- Fit for purpose translation (professional, human, automatic, gisting / self-service)
- Machine Translation and Post Editing (technological advances, user interfaces, real-world case studies)
- Collaborative and Crowd-sourced Translations
- Translation of real-time, user-generated content
- Translation of the spoken word (video, audio, interpreting)
- Standards (interoperability, return on investment, impact on quality)

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

The conference committee seeks original unpublished papers on all aspects of using computer hardware and software to assist in translation. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to those listed above. Papers may report on research, on commercial translation products as well as users and actual implementations.

Authors are invited to submit an extended abstract of a maximum of 750 words of the paper they would like to present, together with a short 200 word abstract and short biography. While the extended abstract is limited to 750 words (longer papers will NOT be considered), it should provide sufficient information to allow evaluation of the submission by the committee. The short abstracts of accepted papers will be used for
online programme and event advertising.

Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection of their submissions by 28 July 2014. Authors whose submissions are accepted for oral presentation will subsequently have the option to submit a full paper for inclusion in the conference proceedings, which will be produced on CD for conference delegates. Speakers' final presentations must be submitted by 3 November 2014, in order to be included in the conference proceedings. Speakers will be required to register for the conference and pay a reduced registration fee.

Postdoctoral position in translation, natural language processing or machine learning, IMMI-CNRS, Orsay, FR

 

Post-doc position at IMMI-CNRS

A post-doctoral position is proposed at IMMI-CNRS (Orsay, France - http://www.immi-labs.org/). IMMI is an International Joint Research CNRS Unit (UMI) in the field of Multimedia and Multilingual Document
Processing. It gathers three contributing partners: LIMSI-CNRS, RWTH Aachen and KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology).


Context of the project

The project relies on an experimental platform for online monitoring of social media and information streams, with self-adaptive properties, in order to detect, collect, process, categorize, and analyze multilingual streams. The platform includes advanced linguistic analysis, discourse analysis, extraction of entities and terminology, topic detection, translation and the project includes studies on unsupervised and cross-lingual adaptation.


Requirements and objectives

A PhD in a field related to the project (translation, natural language processing or machine learning) is required. The candidate will perform research in the framework mentioned above, and will supervize collection and annotation of the data. Salary will follow CNRS standard rules for contractual researchers, according to the experience of the candidate.

Two Postdoctoral positions in Machine Learning for Machine translation, LIMSI-CNRS, Orsay

Two postdoctoral positions are available at the LIMSI-CNRS lab. The
positions are all one year, with possibilities of extension. We are
seeking researchers with interests in machine learning applied to
statistical machine translation, automatic speech recognition or
computational linguistics.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Speech translation
- Bayesian models for natural language processing
- Multilingual topic models
- Word Sense Disambiguation
- Statistical Language Modeling

Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in machine learning or natural
language/speech processing. Please send your CV and/or questions to

Le Département de Langues Modernes Appliquées et le Centre pour l’Industrie des Langues vous invitent à participer vendredi, le 10 octobre 2014, à la conférence internationale organisée annuellement à l’occasion de la rentrée pour les deux mastères en LMA : le Mastère Européen de Traductologie-Terminologie (METT) et le Mastère Européen d’Interprétation de Conférence (MEIC).

À cette XIVème édition, réalisée en collaboration avec l’Université Otto-Friedrich de Bamberg (Allemagne), nous vous proposons de débattre autour de quelques aspects portant sur l’interdisciplinarité de deux domaines d’intérêt : La Traduction et l’interprétation de conférence à l’interférence des disciplines.

Nous nous adressons aux traducteurs et aux traductologues, aux terminologues, aux interprètes de conférence et aux interprètes communautaires, tout en essayant de mobiliser à la fois l’attention des experts en communication interculturelle, en traduction automatique, en didactique des disciplines de spécialité étudiées en langues étrangères, des formateurs de traducteurs et d’interprètes de conférence, ainsi que de toutes celles et ceux qui sont intéressés par l’activité de recherche dans ces domaines.

Le traducteur et l’interprète de conférence sont considérés, plus que jamais auparavant, comme des médiateurs linguistiques et culturels. Ils bâtissent des ponts entre des domaines des plus divers et, par l’intermédiaire de l’exercice si éprouvant de la traduction, ils mettent en œuvre ce que Paul Ricœur appelait  « la médiation entre la pluralité des cultures et l’unité de l’humanité » . Le talent, l’esprit analytique, la maîtrise approfondie des langues source et cible, auxquels s’ajoute l’utilisation intelligente des NTIC, représentent leurs principaux instruments de travail quotidien. Ils leur permettent des incursions et des expériences des plus inattendues dans divers domaines de la connaissance dont le sens peut rester caché si elles ne sont pas vécues dans cette dimension spécifique de la pluridisciplinarité et de l’interdisciplinarité. Quelle est la relation entre leur poids et le type de traduction/interprétation effectué ? Comment et dans quelle mesure cette relation se modifie-t-elle ? Quels sont les aspects théoriques et méthodologiques dont il faudrait tenir compte dans le processus de traduction/d’interprétation ? Voilà quelques-unes des nombreuses questions qui peuvent surgir dans un contexte d’interférences disciplinaires. C’est à ces questions que nous attendons vos réponses de théoriciens et/ou de praticiens dans divers domaines. 

Nous vous proposons trois principaux axes pour les débats :

1. Traduction générale et spécialisée/interprétation de conférence et interprétation communautaire:

a. Nouvelles directions et approches de la traduction/de l’interprétation de conférence. Aspects communs, évolutions et délimitations nécessaires par rapport aux approches philologiques.

b. Didactique de l’interprétation de conférence et/ou de la traduction générale et spécialisée.

c. Communication, études (inter)culturelles et contexte sociolinguistique : leur rôle dans la formation des traducteurs et des interprètes.

d. Nouvelles technologies et leur impact sur la qualité et les résultats de la traduction générale et/ou spécialisée ainsi que sur l’interprétation de conférence.

e. Didactique de l’élaboration/de la gestion du projet traductologique.

2. Ingénierie linguistique et multimédia :

a. Linguistique de corpus.

b. Traduction/interprétation audio-visuelle et multimédia. Évolutions récentes, applications dans le processus de formation des traducteurs/des interprètes.

c. Rédaction/expression écrite dans le domaine technique. Rédaction /expression écrite créative.

d. Localisation et sous-titrage : formes particulières de la traduction spécialisée.

e. Édition et post-édition.

3 . Terminologie

a. Didactique de la terminologie dans le cadre de la spécialisation LMA.

b. Didactique de l’élaboration et de la gestion du projet terminologique multilingue.

c. Bases de données terminologiques.

d. Rôle du terminologue dans la création de nouvelles terminologies.

e. Rôle du spécialiste dans la validation des termes.

Les travaux du colloque se tiendront dans la salle de conférences de l’Hôtel Universitas (no. 7, rue Pandurilor, Cluj-Napoca).

Langues de communication :

Les interventions et les débats se dérouleront en anglais, français, espagnol et roumain, langues pour lesquelles une interprétation simultanée sera assurée.

Publication:

Après évaluation, les articles qui répondent aux standards RIELMA (Revue Internationale d’Études en Langues Modernes Appliquées / International Review of Studies in Modern Applied Languages) seront publiés dans le numéro 8/2015 de la revue. Les textes proposés pour la publication, rédigés en anglais, français, allemand, espagnol, italien, portugais ou russe, seront envoyés à l’adresse colocviulma@yahoo.com, accompagnés d’un résumé, de 5 mots-clés et d’une brève biobibliographie de l’auteur.

Renseignements pratiques :

Le paiement des frais d’inscription au colloque, au montant de 100 RON (25€), sera réglé à l’arrivée. Ces frais ne couvrent pas le déplacement, les repas (à l’exception du repas de midi, le jour du colloque) et le séjour, qui sont à la charge des participants. Le comité d’organisation du colloque vous fournira, en temps utile, des renseignements et des suggestions concernant les tarifs des hôtels les plus convenables à Cluj-Napoca.

Calendrier : 

Le 1 septembre 2014 : date limite pour l’envoi du titre et du résumé de l’intervention (500 mots tout au plus); le 10 septembre 2014 : confirmation de l’acceptation; le 1 mars 2015 : date limite pour l’envoi de la version définitive de l’intervention en vue de la publication.

Le thème Recherches linguistiques et corpus mis en place au sein du laboratoire STIH de l’Université Paris-Sorbonne a pour objet le développement d’une réflexion commune et croisée, d’ordre épistémologique et méthodologique, sur la notion de corpus telle qu’elle est exploitée aujourd’hui dans les sciences du langage, et, plus largement, dans les sciences humaines et sociales. On y traite des questions relatives aux notions de donnée, d’observable, d’empiricité, de théorie (lien type/occurrence), de variable contextuelle, d’annotation, de codage, de catégorisation, etc. On s’interroge sur la fonction des corpus dans l’activité de recherche. Ce thème transversal est organisé en séminaires-ateliers ouverts notamment aux chercheurs, aux enseignants-chercheurs, aux ingénieurs, aux doctorants et aux étudiants de master. Les séances sont constituées de deux conférences, suivies d’un atelier d’observation et d’application.
