Linguistica Antverpiensia, New Series – Themes in Translation Studies

The editorial board of the peer reviewed journal Linguistica Antverpiensia NS-Themes in Translation Studies is happy to announce the launch of its new Open Journal format. LANS-TTS published 11 annual issues devoted to current themes in Translation Studies between 2002 and 2012, and will continue to publish annually on selected TS themes, but in open access, and can be downloaded from:

Its first digital issue is entitled “Research models and methods in legal translation”. It has been guest edited by Łucja Biel (University of Warsaw, Poland) & Jan Engberg (Aarhus University, Denmark).

Study on Intellectual Property Rights in translation

The EC Directorate-General for Translation is conducting a study on Intellectual Property Rights in translation.

The study aims to tackle the question of how intellectual property law has been impacted by the advances of technology and new business models in the global translation industry. The secondary aim is to raise awareness among stakeholders and decision-makers of the relevance of IPRs for the fair retribution of creators, hence for the preservation of quality and innovation.

Universities and other stakeholders are welcome to send examples of anonymised translation contracts with provisions on intellectual property rights which could enrich DGT's reflection on the broad issue in the language industry, for a research project to be finished mid 2014. The School of Translation, Glendon College, York University invites applications for an Alternate Stream (teaching focused) tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Lecturer to begin July 1, 2014, in order to fulfill the needs of the newly-created Master of Conference Interpreting (MCI).

Glendon is the bilingual (English-French) liberal arts Faculty of York University. It offers a variety of programs in the humanities and social sciences. It is located on a separate mid-town campus.

Duties will include teaching at the graduate level and administrative responsibilities. The successful candidate must be able to teach in English and French and must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. It is essential that the successful candidate commit to being on campus during the academic year.

The successful applicant must be able to provide documented evidence of excellence in teaching and demonstrate commitment to pedagogy and programmatic leadership. The successful candidate must also hold a Master of Conference Interpreting or equivalent. She or he must be a French A, English B/C and must have experience in the field of conference interpreting, as demonstrated – among other things – by professional accreditation with one or more of the recognized agencies (e.g., Government of Canada, United Nations, European Institutions, US Department of State, World Bank Group, etc.). The successful candidate should also have a PhD in Translation/Interpreting Studies or a cognate discipline or the equivalent of a PhD (as demonstrated through such accomplishments as experience teaching conference interpreting at the university level, providing in-house interpreter training, curriculum development, published research on interpreting, or pedagogical innovation).

Preference will be given to those who have as a B or a C one of the program’s additional working languages (Arabic, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish). The successful candidate may also demonstrate the following assets: ability to teach in the School of Translation’s other graduate and undergraduate programs, and ability to contribute to other program areas at Glendon.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

Pour sa sixième année consécutive de l’organisation du colloque international Miroir linguistique de l’Univers la Chaire de français de l’Université Brioussov et le Centre de Réussite Universitaire-Erevan centrent l’attention sur les perspectives de la conception de la traduction comme médiation interculturelle et lancent un appel à communications destiné aux chercheurs francophones désireux de présenter leur vision sur la problématique concernée.
Autant la traduction sous-tend et préconise la diversité linguistique et la valorisation de l'Autre, autant elle est une source du nivellement et la compréhension erronée des cultures même si le but recherché est l'harmonisation de la communication interculturelle.
Aussi, nous proposons-nous d'interroger le processus de la traduction comme une médiation interculturelle sous ses différents aspects: historique, linguistique et socio-linguistique.

Plusieurs axes de recherche pourront être envisagés:
• Traductologie au carrefour des disciplines linguistiques
• Histoire de la traduction française.
• Théorie et pratique de la traduction. Modèles de traduction.
• Problématiques de la traduction littéraire.
• Dialogue des langues et des cultures.

‘Public service translation’ (also known as ‘Community translation’) is emerging as an important, distinct subfield in Translation Studies. Its focus on the translation of texts produced by public services for the benefit of speakers of less-established languages makes it a particularly relevant research area in today’s globalizing world. In a multicultural society decisions about what is translated and how the translation is done have far-reaching implications for the inclusion and exclusion of certain communities and/or community members.

This one-day conference aims to bring together researchers focusing on:

· Language policy and public service translation

· Translation and inclusivity

· Socio-cultural diversity and translation

· Training public service translators
